“My Blueberry Nights” Gave Me the Blues
April 9, 2008Sofa Correspondent Ali Khan checked out the new Wong Kar-Wai. Let’s see what he thought!
My Blueberry Nights, the debut English-language feature by Wong Kar-Wai, is sophisticated with technique yet I feel it desperately tries to implement the Kar-Wai famous autuer style into American cinema. The movie is about Elizabeth (Norah Jones, the Grammy award winning singer who is also the daughter of the Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar) who is driven by her quest to understand and later return for love where she wasn’t looking(in a soho cafe) and we travel with her for a year to southern and western locations in the states. This movie reminds me of Wai’s capabilities as a director to incorporate late night eating with love.
ChungKing Express (1994) had a similar story about a late night eatery worker in Hong Kong where My Blueberry Nights has a translucent plot with Jude Law’s performance as a late night café worker in SoHo, NY as I am left to question the conundrum by the overpowering acting by the supporting leads of Natalie Portman, and Rachel Weisz. This is exactly why I feel at times great actresses shouldn’t play the supporting role, and their performace overtakes norah jone’s first performance as an actress. The incredible cinematography techniques used by Darius Khondji, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in Evita (1994), uses frame rates of over a 100 per second to slow down at such an incredible rate the emotional scenes that capture each detail of the characters reactions in semi-climactic scenes. The Diegetic images(images showing the fictional world that the narrative exists in) of relating blueberry pies with love left more of a repulsive effect than a loving one. I was able to appreciate the star-studded cast that had outstanding performances, and the musical compositions although the weakness of the plot that takes away from its execution in climax leaves you questioning. Kar Wai can still save his legacy when his next film that is a remake of the 1947 film The Lady from Shanghai currently in production releases. Wong Kar Wai is infamous for wearing sunglasses, yet when they are removed it is as dangerous as Cyclops in X-men on a beam rampage. I hope he removes them for his next film and beams america again with his infamous techniques.
