The NBC line up was announced this week, and boy, were there some surprises. The biggest shock of the bunch is that NBC has greenlit a spinoff of The Office! Although, rumors of such a spinoff have been circulating for several months, I seriously believed them to be just rumors and was totally thrown off by this development. I watch a lot of television, and personally, I believe that The Office is the funniest show currently on television. Its humor, though sometimes outrageous, is very relatable to the everyday lives of American office workers, making it that much more funny. The Office is original; it’s taken television comedy beyond the sitcom formula and laughing tracks. The spinoff will definitely try and do the same kind of thing, but I don’t know if it’ll be able to achieve it. One of my biggest concerns of the spinoff was that it would “steal” a character from the original show to star in the spinoff because part of what makes The Office so incredible is the ensemble. I feared that if The Office were to pull a Grey’s Anatomy and steal away one of the characters, like Private Practice, it would flop. Thankfully though, it’s been confirmed that the show will include new faces and new locations. This, as well as the fact that Greg Daniels will be producing it, makes me feel a little better about the show. Only time will tell if The Office Spinoff will be able to compare to the brilliance of the original and I promise to be open minded and give it a fair chance. Come next February, I really hope I won’t be telling myself: I told you so.
